Our Story

With decades of hands-on experience, we design, manufacture and service equipment that works in some of the world's most challenging environments, from deep water anchor handling to high-precision hydropower applications.

IP Huse AS is a family-owned industrial company with roots going back to the end of the 19th century, located in Steinshamn on Harøya in Møre og Romsdal. The company's history is closely linked to the development of the Norwegian coastal industry, and later to the offshore and maritime sectors.

The business has its origins in the entrepreneurship of Ingebrigt P. Huse, who from the beginning of the 20th century was involved in fisheries, processing, shipping and mechanical activities. In 1927 Steinshamn Formjølfabrikk was established, at a time when herring oil and herring meal production was a new and growing industry along the Norwegian coast.

In the 1930s, the company developed and patented the so-called Husegrabben, a dump grab for herring. This innovation represented a significant technological advance and helped to streamline the herring industry in Norway and internationally. In parallel, mechanical workshop activities were established, where equipment for own and others' production was developed and built.

In 1941 Ingebrigt P. Huse co-founded Hydraulik Brattvåg, together with Einar Røsok. This collaboration marked the start of a long-standing industrial interaction between the firms at Steinshamn and Brattvåg, and Hydraulik Brattvåg later evolved into what is today Kongsberg Maritime.

An important strategic crossroads came in 1970, when IP Huse AS delivered its first anchor handling winch, installed on board the vessel West Avocet. This laid the foundation for the company's further specialization in winches and anchoring equipment for the offshore and maritime industries.

In 1982, the herring oil factory was finally closed down, and all activities were concentrated on the development and production of mechanical equipment, with the main emphasis on winches. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, the company delivered a range of technically demanding and customised solutions, including for FPSOs (floating production and storage units) and international offshore projects.

In 2002 IP Huse AS was awarded the Enterprise of the Year award in Møre og Romsdal, in recognition of the company's industrial development, innovation ability and importance as a regional cornerstone company.

Further deliveries of winches for 6th generation drilling rigs in 2006 and later deliveries of some of the world's most powerful anchor handling winches consolidated the company's position as a leading supplier internationally.

During the period 2016—2018, large electric anchor handling winches were delivered to Maersk vessels built at Kleven shipyard.

In 2019, the vessel Island Victory set a world record as a specialized anchor handling vessel with a bollard pull of 477 tons. The specially developed anchor handling winch package was supplied by IP Huse AS.

Another fast track SPS is finished! The Deepsea Aberdeen SPS at CCB surely did keep many of us at I.P Huse busy with various works both at CCB and at our factory premises at Harøy. We performed overhaul of all 8 fairleads, in situ machining of drum brake surfaces including overhaul of brake bands and re-welded wear surfaces in the chain wheels! Many thanks to Odfjell Drilling for trusting us again to perform services on your winches and fairleads. Much appreciated! Good planning together ahead of rig arrival was crucial, and when unforeseen problems came up we tackled this together in the best way possible I think? Thanks also to all involved engineers from us onsite at CCB and at our workshop for making this possible, this was excellent Team Work! The Logistics is an important piece of such a puzzle. Sending large units from Bergen to be repaired at Harøy and returned quickly back to rig was also very well executed! We are always ready to tackle new challenges :)

This week we have a visit from two 9th grade students from Harøy School. They visited all the departments of the company. Started in the construction department by drawing himself a barbecue. Furthermore, they have had the parts burned out, welded, machined, assembled, and are now sandblasting and painting. The grill grate that does not show in the photo is also fully made. Today, contact teacher Rigmor Harnes stopped by to check how things were going. Thank you for visiting Andreas Silseth Harnes and Lukas Male Sandøy! Welcome back, and good grilling 😊

Out of office again last week on Equinor's Kristin FPU. After a few trips onboard for inspection/planning we have started a upgrade project on the 16 mooring winches. The winches will undergo some modifications/rebuilding of the load reading capability, length monitoring and remote control operation plus some other upgrades. The upgrade is in cooperation with our good colleagues at Kongsberg Maritime in Brattvåg and Aibel. Very good rig/onboard crew making it a joy to perform our work. 👏 Thanks to all the good help we got onboard and from the Teams ashore! We'll be back later this summer! In between our work Frank Vassgård and I joined Norway's National day march around the rig and were served sausages and ice cream like the one's celebrating ashore.

Another SPS almost completed, this time for Deepsea Stavanger. We have been in close cooperation with Odfjell and Kongsberg Maritime planning the various tasks our service team should attend to while the rig is having a pitstop at Hanøytangen. All 8 fairleads has been dismantled and sent to our factory for overhaul and installed back on the rig. We have also performed various service work on the 8 winches. Two teams have been on these tasks, 1 team at Hanøytangen and our workshop team at our factory in Harøy. Thanks to Odfjell Drilling and in particular Paloma Menino Drønen and Lasse Breivik for our good meetings and planning together. This project was thought to be very hard to finalize in the short amount of time available, but we made it even ahead of the plan! Many thanks to our attending service engineers both at Hanøytangen and the crew at our factory for making this possible! I'm enclosing a few snapshots of the project, pictures are borrowed from the attending engineers. Do you have need for assistance with your fairleads and winches during SPS or in offshore operation, do not hesitate to contact us! Looking forward for the next SPS with Odfjell Drilling in May! Happy Easter Holiday! 🐣
